Rumesh tops world men’s javelin rankings

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga has climbed to No. 1 in the world rankings for the men’s javelin throw.

The achievement follows an exceptional season, highlighted by his gold medal-winning performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rumesh claimed the Commonwealth title with a throw of 89.75 metres.

This marks the first time a Sri Lankan athlete has been ranked world No. 1 in the men’s javelin throw.

Germany’s Julian Weber, who previously occupied the top spot, has dropped to second in the latest world rankings.

Rumesh has been the standout performer in the men’s javelin throw this season, consistently producing world-class performances.

His Commonwealth Games victory also ended Sri Lanka’s 20-year wait for a gold medal in the men’s javelin throw.

Earlier this season, at the Diamond League meeting in Rome on June 04, Rumesh produced a throw of 92.62 metres, setting a new Sri Lankan record and registering the best throw in the world this season.
