Burnham appoints Cabinet

Andy Burnham is the UK’s new prime minister following Keir Starmer’s official resignation on Monday morning.

Burnham arrived at Buckingham Palace just after midday on Monday, where he was invited by King Charles to form a government, officially making him PM.

Burnham arrived at Downing Street to applause after his appointment as PM, where he delivered his first speech and made the following points : • He is “acutely conscious” he is the seventh PM since 2016, calling this a moment for “reflection and new resolution”
• He stressed the importance of Britain regaining stability
• He also said politicians have “not been good enough” but pledged to be better – promising the biggest changes in the last 40 years
• Power will be taken out of Downing Street and into “every postcode in the land”, he pledged
• He will set out measures from tomorrow to help give people “some breathing space” with the cost of living, he said
• And he said “I will soon go through that door behind me and issue my first instruction to end rough sleeping in our country”

• “I will give this my all,” he concludedLater Burnham began selecting who would make up his cabinet, and who would be on their way out of government.

Some of the key appointments include John Healey as chancellor, Ed Miliband as foreign secretary and former deputy PM Angela Rayner returning to government as housing secretary. Wes Streeting has also made his return to Cabinet, this time as defence secretary.
