Government employee who worked at Akila’s fuel station remanded
A suspect arrested for allegedly causing a loss to the Government by working at a private fuel station owned by former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, while being employed as a Management Assistant at the Office of the Former President’s Senior Adviser (Devolved Administration), was ordered to be remanded until 18 August by Colombo Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya today (12).
The suspect, Deepal Sanjeewa Ratnayake of Kuliyapitiya, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and produced before the court.
The Magistrate ordered that the suspect be remanded after considering submissions made by CIABOC that granting him bail could obstruct the ongoing investigations and interfere with evidence.
Delivering his order, the Magistrate noted that although the incident on which the case was based relates to the period from 2022 to 2024, the prosecution had submitted that the documents presented by the suspect’s side as evidence in the case had been prepared in 2026.
