No-confidence motion against Justice Minister to be tabled next week

The Opposition will submit a no-confidence motion against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara to the Speaker next week, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ajith P. Perera said.

Ajith P. Perera stated that the Minister of Justice had failed to fulfil all the responsibilities entrusted to him.

The Opposition has decided to move the no-confidence motion on the grounds that the Minister failed to discharge his responsibilities and accountability with regard to ensuring the safety of both prison officers and inmates following the unrest at Negombo Prison, during which prison officers were killed.

Accordingly, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and other Opposition MPs signed the no-confidence motion against the Minister in Parliament on the 10th of this month.

Meanwhile, the Opposition had also taken steps to bring a no-confidence motion against Kumara Jayakody, who served as Minister of Energy, over the substandard coal controversy.

The debate on that motion was held in Parliament on 10 April, and the no-confidence motion against the then Minister of Energy Kumar Jayakody was defeated by a majority of 104 votes.

The motion received 153 votes against and 49 votes in favour.

In addition, the Opposition had also planned to bring a no-confidence motion against Minister of Education Dr Harini Amarasuriya in January this year.

The Opposition signed that motion on 7 January, alleging that the Government’s education reforms contained material deemed unsuitable for children, numerous errors relating to subject content, and a failure by the Minister to address those issues in a proper and timely manner.
