Zhongsing Supermarket (Pvt) Ltd, located on R.A. de Mel Mawatha in Colombo 03, was today (1) fined Rs. 300,000 by the Magistrate’s Court.

The penalty was imposed for violating the provisions and regulations of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act by engaging in practices that misled and deceived consumers.

The court also ordered the destruction of the items produced as case exhibits.

The ruling was delivered in a case filed before the Colombo No. 5 Magistrate’s Court by investigating officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority.

The charges against the supermarket included failing to display the prices of goods, not maintaining suppliers’ invoices or receipts, and offering products for sale without mandatory labelling information on the packaging, including the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), and the name and address of the manufacturer or importer.

The Fort Magistrate’s Court today (1) ordered former Director of the State Intelligence Service, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, to provide the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with the passwords to his mobile phone and laptop as part of the investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile, Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena rejected a request by Sallay’s lawyers to remove the investigation from the current Director of the CID, Deputy Inspector General Shani Abeysekara.

According to the latest country income classifications released by the World Bank Group on 1 July 2026, Sri Lanka has been upgraded from a Lower-Middle-Income Country to an Upper-Middle-Income Country.

The updated classification covers 218 economies. Alongside Sri Lanka, Jordan, Micronesia, Philippines and Vietnam have also moved from the lower-middle-income category to the upper-middle-income category. Meanwhile, Togo has advanced from the low-income category to the lower-middle-income category.

The World Bank noted that, although these countries crossed the same income threshold, each followed a distinct economic path.

Dr J.G.L. Sulakshana Jayawardena has been appointed as the new Director General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The letter of appointment was handed over to Dr Jayawardena by the Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon (1).
