Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (31) ordered the release on bail of two suspects, including the Indian owner of the Jaffna Kings franchise, who had been remanded after being arrested over allegations of proposing to fix matches in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) for financial gain.

The suspects released on bail are Indian national Manjot Kalra and Yuvraj Pushpa, who is alleged to have aided and abetted the offence.

After prison officials produced the suspects before court, the Chief Magistrate ordered their release on two personal bail bonds of Rs. 500,000 each and a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 each.

The Magistrate also imposed an overseas travel ban on the suspects and ordered them to report every Monday to the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports-related Offences.

Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was sentenced to death by a majority decision of a permanent three-judge bench of the Colombo High Court after being found guilty of failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks despite receiving prior intelligence, dereliction of duty, and aiding and abetting murder.

The case was heard today (31) before the three-judge High Court bench comprising Priyantha Liyanage, Viraj Weerasuriya and Thilakaratne Bandara.

Delivering the majority verdict, Judges Priyantha Liyanage and Thilakaratne Bandara found Fernando guilty on 854 of the 855 charges brought against him by the prosecution.

“On the evening before the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, the then Director of the State Intelligence Service, Nilantha Jayawardena, informed the accused of the attacks that were due to take place the following day.

However, as Defence Secretary, the accused took no action whatsoever to prevent them.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has announced that compensation payments to insured depositors of Nation Lanka Finance PLC will commence tomorrow (1).

Accordingly, the compensation payments will be made through selected branches of the People’s Bank.

The process has been initiated following the cancellation of the finance business licence of Nation Lanka Finance PLC.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank stated that eligible depositors under the Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance Scheme will be entitled to compensation of up to a maximum of Rs. 1.1 million, based on the total value of their insured deposits.

The compensation will be paid by crediting the funds to existing People’s Bank accounts, through newly opened accounts, or by cash payments over the counter.

The Central Bank revoked the finance business licence issued to Nation Lanka Finance PLC with effect from 3 July 2026 under Section 66(2) of the Banking (Special Provisions) Act,

Legal proceedings have been initiated to confiscate illegal assets worth Rs. 772 million in favour of the State during the period up to now in 2026, Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said.

He made these remarks today (31) at a special media briefing held at the main operations office and media centre of the Ratama Ekata national programme.

During the briefing, updates were provided on the role of the Sri Lanka Police under the Ratama Ekata national programme, ongoing anti-narcotics operations, and the process of confiscating illegal assets belonging to drug traffickers.

The Police Media Spokesman further stated that legal action had been initiated in 2025 to confiscate illegal assets worth Rs. 1,549 million in favour of the State.
