A special tribute programme hailing veteran singer – Dr. Sujatha Attanayake was organised by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation at its Kumaratunga Munidasa Studio yesterday (July 28).

Attending the programme – “Dr. Sujatha Attanayake Pranama’, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya praised veteran singer Dr. Sujatha Attanayake for her enduring contribution to Sri Lanka’s cultural identity and her ability to unite people through art.

“A nation’s cultural memory is shaped not only by history books, but also by the creations, voices and memories that live on in the hearts of its people,” PM Amarasuriya said.

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has launched an investigation after several swimmers were stung by Physalia (Blue Bottle Jellyfish) washed ashore along Panadura beach.

The agency has also issued safety advice to the public following reports of multiple beachgoers being stung as well.

The investigation was initiated after the Panadura Municipal Council informed NARA about an increase in the presence of jellyfish along the beach.

NARA officials visited the area yesterday (July 28) to examine the situation, identify the species and assess potential risks to the public.

A NARA official said there is a high possibility that blue bottle jellyfish have washed ashore along the entire stretch of Panadura beach.

The warning follows an incident on July 27, where several swimmers were affected by jellyfish stings while at Panadura beach. The victims were hospitalised, treated and later discharged.

The Chief Jailor who was on duty at the Negombo Prison during the recent tragic unrest, has been ordered to appear before courts tomorrow (July 30) to give evidence.

Negombo Magistrate Shilani Perera made the order yesterday (July 28).

Additionally, the magistrate ordered a detailed report to be submitted to the court concerning the 89 prison police officers who arrived at the Negombo Prison from Welikada, as well as a report regarding those receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and the Negombo Hospital.

Accordingly, when the case was taken up at 2:00pm yesterday,  the Superintendent of Prisons failed to appear before court. The magistrate noted that the superintendent had been summoned to court over several days. Due to his absence again today, the magistrate ordered notices to be issued to the Prison Superintendent. At that point, the present prison officers stated that the superintendent would be arriving at court. Consequently,

A police constable attached to the Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Force Unit has committed suicide by shooting himself with his service firearm.

According to the police, the incident occurred at around 5.30 am today (July 29).

The officer was admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital with critical injuries but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The deceased was identified as a 28-year-old resident of the Muruthalawa area in Peradeniya.

Further investigations are underway.

Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) has announced temporary restrictions on train services along the Kelani Valley railway line and the closure of the Nawala-Narahenpita railway crossing due to essential repair work.

The SLR said the measures are being implemented to facilitate urgent renovation work at the Nawala-Narahenpita road railway crossing, located between Narahenpita and Nugegoda railway stations.

Accordingly, train services between Colombo Fort and Nugegoda railway stations on the Kelani Valley line will be suspended from 7.00 a.m. on Aug. 01 until 8.00 p.m. on Aug. 02.

The SLR has also announced revised train schedules for services operating on the Kelani Valley line on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
