The National Transport Commission (NTC) has announced plans to introduce a new digital system to monitor passenger buses.

The Commission said arrangements would be made to fully monitor buses throughout their journeys, from the point of departure until they reach their final destination.

The new digital monitoring system is expected to be introduced on passenger buses within this year. The system will monitor several aspects, including bus operations, passenger safety, the conduct of drivers and conductors, vehicle speeds and bus stops.

The National Transport Commission further stated that if any violations of regulations are detected through the monitoring system, necessary action will be taken against the buses concerned, including the issuing of penalty points and the cancellation of their operating permits.

Twenty-three-year-old Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing glory to Sri Lanka.

The event was held today (1 August) at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

Rumesh secured the remarkable victory with a throw of 89.75 metres on his second attempt.

This marks Sri Lanka’s sixth gold medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games. It is also the country’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in 20 years, since Chinthana Vidanage won gold in weightlifting at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
