The number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has increased to 84,091, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

The total number of dengue-related deaths recorded during this period remains at 61, with no new deaths reported yesterday (July 29).

At district level, the highest number of dengue cases has been reported from the Gampaha District, with 17,850 cases recorded.

The Colombo District has reported the second-highest number of cases, with 16,716 patients identified.

Among provinces, the Western Province continues to record the highest number of dengue infections, with 44,552 cases reported so far.

The Southern Province has recorded the second-highest number of cases, with 12,656 infections.

Meanwhile, the National Dengue Control Unit stated that 175 high-risk areas have been identified across the island amid the continued spread of dengue.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting that took place during a party in the Palliyawatta area of Kadirana within the Wattala Police Division.

The arrest was made by officers of the Western Province North Crime Division yesterday (July 29) in the Mukalangamuwa area of Seeduwa.

According to Police, the shooting occurred on July 23 during a birthday party held at a hotel, when a group of assailants arrived in a vehicle, opened fire and fled the scene.

Police said that, as part of the ongoing investigation, 02 male suspects and a female suspect had previously been arrested in connection with the incident.

The latest suspect is alleged to have aided and abetted the crime by transferring funds from his bank account to rent the vehicle used in the shooting.

Further investigations are underway.

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is being observed today (July 30).

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, the international observance aims to raise awareness of human trafficking as a serious human rights violation and to mobilise global action to protect victims and combat the crime.

The day seeks to increase public awareness of human trafficking, safeguard the rights of victims and strengthen international cooperation to address the global challenge.

Marking the occasion, the Sri Lanka Police has also shared a special awareness message on its official Facebook page highlighting the significance of the day.

Five Grade 9 students from a school in Ratnapura have been arrested by the Kuruwita Police over charges of sexually abusing a female classmate.

The alleged incident is reported to have taken place on July 26.

Officers attached to the Children and Women’s Bureau of the Kuruwita Police arrested the 05 students following a complaint and were produced before the Ratnapura Magistrate’s Court.

The Ratnapura Magistrate ordered that 02 of the suspects, who had allegedly committed the abuse, be remanded for 28 days at a juvenile detention centre.

The remaining 03 students, who had aided and abetted the others, were released into their parents’ custody.

The schoolgirl has been admitted to the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital for a medical examination.

Further investigations are underway under the instructions of Chief Inspector Udaya C. Mayadunna, with Sub-Inspector Sunethra leading the inquiry.

The final grand procession of the 2026 Esala Perahera of the historic Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya was held last night (July 29), with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake joining thousands of devotees to witness the sacred event.
