The governments of Japan and Sri Lanka have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on the Employment for Skill Development Program on July 23.

 Although the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Technical Intern Training Program has been already in place with Sri Lanka, the MOC between the two countries was signed in conjunction with the commencement of the Employment for Skill Development Program, from April 2027, which replaces the Technical Intern Training Program.

The purpose of this MOC is to protect Skill Development Employees and to promote the Employment for Skill Development Program adequately under bilateral cooperation by setting out the responsibilities for sending and accepting Skill Development Employees between both sides.

Charith Abeysinghe, who was remanded in custody again after failing to meet his bail conditions, was released on bail today (30) after fulfilling the required conditions.

On 28 July, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court granted bail to three suspects, including attorney Rakhitha Rajapaksha and Charith Abeysinghe, who had been remanded in connection with an alleged incident involving the acceptance of a Rs. 120 million bribe from the wife of alleged notorious drug trafficker Harak Kata.

The court ordered the release of attorney Rakhitha Rajapaksha and another suspect after they fulfilled their bail conditions. However, Charith Abeysinghe was unable to satisfy the bail requirements at the time and was therefore returned to remand custody. Having now met those conditions, he has been released on bail today.

The Aswesuma allowance for beneficiaries aged over 70 for July 2026 is scheduled to be credited to their Aswesuma bank accounts tomorrow (31).

According to reports, under the first phase of the Aswesuma Welfare Benefits Payment Scheme, a total of Rs. 3,108,190,000 has been allocated for 621,638 beneficiaries aged over 70.

Meanwhile, under the second phase of the scheme, Rs. 386,620,000 is due to be credited for 77,324 beneficiaries aged over 70.

Accordingly, the total amount to be paid under the two phases is Rs. 3,494,810,000 for 698,962 beneficiaries. Eligible recipients will be able to access their elderly allowance through their Aswesuma bank accounts from tomorrow.

Sri Lankan national champion Ramesh Tharanga qualified for the men’s javelin final at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland today (30).

Competing in the qualifying round, Tharanga recorded a throw of 82.84 metres to secure his place in the final.

Notably, he finished first in the qualifying round with that performance.

A standout feature of the event was that Tharanga topped the qualifying standings ahead of two Olympic gold medallists – India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.
