22A challenged in Supreme Court

The first petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking a ruling that the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill is inconsistent with the Constitution.

The petition has been submitted by T.M.S. Pasindu Silva, Treasurer of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, and the Assistant Secretary of the same association.

The petitioners are seeking a determination that, if the Bill is to be passed, it must receive a two-thirds majority in Parliament and subsequently be approved by the people at a referendum.
