Ex-minister Akila granted bail

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered to release 2 persons including former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam on bail.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after considering submissions made by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and the lawyers representing the suspects.

The Magistrate ordered each suspect to be released on two sureties of Rs. 05 million each and imposed a travel ban on both suspects.

Kariyawasam faces allegations of misusing 04 employees recruited to the Office of the President’s Senior Advisor for his personal work while serving as an adviser to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The other individual released on bail is an employee of Kariyawasam’s fuel station, who had also been remanded for allegedly aiding and abetting the offence.

The duo were produced before the court today (Aug. 18).
