Seized stock of illegal veterinary medicines, destroyed
A stock of veterinary medicines seized in June 2026, was destroyed at the Kerawalapitiya clinical waste disposal facility yesterday (Aug. 17).
The disposal was conducted under the supervision of officers from the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) with the full cost borne by the relevant manufacturer.
On June 09, the CAA and DAPH had conducted a special joint raid and detected a stock of illegal veterinary medicines that did not meet the required standards and had not been registered with the DAPH.
The total weight of the detected stock was 1,090 kilograms, with an estimated market value of nearly Rs. 3 million.
The CAA warns that the use of such non-compliant veterinary medicines may pose risks not only to the health and lives of animals but also to consumers of animal-derived products such as meat, milk and eggs.
The matter was also identified as a violation of Section 17 of the Animal Diseases Act.
When the relevant manufacturer was summoned and questioned, the manufacturer had admitted the offence and provided an affidavit acknowledging the illegal manufacture and intended distribution of the products.
The CAA urges the public to always check for DAPH registration when purchasing medicines, vitamins or animal feed for their pets or livestock, paying close attention to manufacturing and expiry dates as well.
