Military vets called in as DWC vets continue work-to-rule

The Ministry of Environment has taken steps to mobilise Tri-Forces veterinary services to protect sick and injured wild animals, as veterinarians of the Department of Wildlife Conservation continue their work-to-rule trade union action.

The emergency measure was implemented following a special request made to the Ministry of Defence, on the instructions of the Environment Minister and Deputy Minister, due to difficulties in providing emergency treatment to wildlife outside normal working hours, including weekends and public holidays.

Accordingly, officers from the Sri Lanka Air Force Veterinary Division have already arrived to provide prompt medical treatment to an injured tusker calf, approximately 05 feet tall, found in the Herathgama Beat Forest jurisdiction of the North Western Wildlife Region.

Although the Nikaweratiya Wildlife Health Management Unit had been informed, delays in providing treatment due to the TU action posed a serious risk of further deterioration of the calf’s condition.

The military veterinary team, acting under the direct guidance of the Ministry of Defence, has commenced the necessary medical treatment for the tusker calf, which was under the care and protection of Herathgama Beat Forest officers.

For the duration of the TU action, arrangements have been made to obtain the full services of military veterinarians to ensure emergency medical care and the safety of wildlife.
