1st Kumbal Perahera of Kandy Esala Perahera, tomorrow
The first Kumbal Perahera of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera will take to the streets tomorrow (Aug. 18).
The festival began on Aug. 13 with the traditional Kap Planting ceremony, held at an auspicious time of 6.17 a.m. at the Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini Devalayas.
Following the ceremony, five days of internal processions have been held at the Devalayas from Aug. 13 to today (Aug. 17).
The fifth Kumbal Perahera will be held on Aug. 22, after which the Randoli Perahera will begin.
The first Randoli Perahera will be held from Aug. 23 – 27, with the Grand Randoli Perahera scheduled for Aug. 27, coinciding with the Nikini Full Moon Poya Day.
Following the final procession, the casket containing the sacred relics will be taken to the Asgiriya Gedige Temple in procession, according to ancient rituals, and kept there.
The 04 Devala processions will then proceed to Getambe, where the traditional “Diya Kapeema”, or water-cutting ceremony, will be held in the early hours of Aug. 28.
The festival will conclude with the daytime procession on Aug. 28.
8,000 security personnel deployed
Meanwhile, around 8,000 security personnel are expected to be deployed for the Kandy Esala Perahera.
The security operation will include 6,200 police officers, 564 Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel, 1,200 members of the Tri-forces, and Department of Civil Security personnel.
The Sri Lanka Police K9 Unit and Mounted Police Unit will also assist with security operations.
A special traffic plan will be implemented in Kandy during the festival, with 13 car parks established for visitors.
Police will also set up 14 roadblocks at entry points to Kandy, including the Katugastota, Peradeniya and Tennekumbura bridges, to conduct security checks.
