‘Randeniya Bandara’ dies after Melsiripura accident
The tame elephant named “Randeniya Bandara”, which sustained serious injuries in the road accident in Melsiripura, has died today (Aug. 04), according to reports.
The elephant, from the Randeniya area in Kegalle, had been receiving treatment after being critically injured when it was struck by a sand transport lorry in the Omaragolla area of Melsiripura on July 28.
The elephant had been transported by lorry from Kegalle to a temple in Aralaganwila, Polonnaruwa, to participate in a perahera.
During the journey, the elephant had been unloaded from the lorry and kept by the roadside after one of the vehicle’s tyres deflated and required repairs.
While the elephant was being kept by the roadside, a sand transport lorry travelling from the Dambulla direction allegedly collided with the elephant due to reckless driving, causing the accident.
The impact fractured one of the elephant’s legs and caused severe injuries to its spinal area.
Veterinary officers provided immediate treatment following the accident, while Dr Tharindu Wijekoon, a veterinary surgeon who treats tuskers at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, also arrived at the location and continued treatment.
However, as the elephant remained in critical condition, members of the Maha Sangha visited the location and conducted Pirith chanting for the elephant, according to reports.
The driver of the sand lorry, who allegedly caused the accident due to negligent driving, was arrested by Melsiripura Police.
Further investigations are underway.
