Alerts raised over flood risk at Peradeniya Uni.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya – Prof. W.M.T. Madhujith has issued a special advisory urging students to remain on high alert due to the rising water levels of the Mahaweli River amid prevailing adverse weather conditions.
The Vice Chancellor stressed that students residing in university hostels located along the Mahaweli River basin should exercise extreme caution to avoid potential risks arising from the worsening situation.
Meanwhile, the university administration has taken steps to immediately evacuate students staying on the ground floor of the Sarasavi Madura Hostel as a precautionary measure.
Continuous heavy rainfall since last night (Aug. 02) has caused the Mahaweli River to swell, with reports indicating that the bridge rehabilitation site near the Peradeniya ‘Kalu Paalama’ has already been inundated.
Several pieces of heavy machinery at the site have been submerged, while some equipment and construction materials have reportedly been swept away by strong currents.
Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation has warned that several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River face a risk of flooding within the next 24 hours.
The flood warning, issued at 12.30 am today (Aug. 03), will remain in effect until 12.30 am tomorrow (Aug. 04).
