JSASL opposes judges’ retirement age proposal

The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSASL), which represents District Judges and Magistrates across the country, has strongly opposed a proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of members of the judiciary.

The Association warned that the proposal could adversely affect judicial independence, the professional advancement of judges and public confidence in the judicial system.

In a detailed letter addressed to Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara on July 22, 2026, the Association stated that its members had unanimously decided to oppose the proposal to extend the statutory retirement age of all judges, including High Court judges.
