2 arrested as Chinese national abducted from Port City found murdered

The body of a Chinese national, who is suspected to have been abducted from the Colombo Port City, has been found concealed in a wooded area at Gatekade, Karandana, in Eheliyagoda.

Police said that preliminary investigations revealed that, in the early hours of today (20), three Chinese nationals who had arrived at the Colombo Port City area in a cab to go fishing were attacked by another group of Chinese nationals who arrived in two vehicles.

During the incident, one of the Chinese nationals was abducted. Police also stated that a van used by the victims had been abandoned at the scene.

An air pistol was recovered from the van.

Meanwhile, police officers from Eheliyagoda Police Station, who had gone to the Karandana Gatekade area to conduct an illegal liquor raid, discovered a suspicious pile of stones in a nearby wooded area.

Upon examining the site, officers noticed what appeared to be part of a human hand protruding from between the stones. A further search led to the discovery of a concealed body.

Subsequent identification confirmed that the body was that of the Chinese national who had been abducted from the Port City, police said.

The body has been taken to Avissawella Hospital for a post-mortem examination and further forensic investigations.

Police also found a motor car near the location where the body was discovered and suspect that it may have been used to transport the victim’s body.

Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler said that two Chinese nationals suspected of being involved in the incident were arrested near Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, while attempting to leave the country.

The suspects have been handed over to the Coastal Police Division for further investigations, while police are continuing inquiries to locate other suspects believed to be connected to the crime.

The motive behind the dispute among the Chinese nationals has not yet been established, and investigations are ongoing.

Embassy calls for comprehensive investigation

Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka has urged the Sri Lankan Police to carry out a thorough inquiry and take all necessary measures to safeguard the personal safety, lawful rights and legitimate interests of Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka.
