CAA raids 112 shops & eateries near bus terminals
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says they have conducted 112 special surprise raids yesterday (July 20), targeting shops and restaurants located around major bus terminals, transport centres and long-distance bus stands in cities across Sri Lanka.
The main objective of this special operation was to protect consumers from unfair trading practices at transport centres frequently used by members of the public and passengers.
Major violations detected during the raids included:
- Selling beverages, snacks and packaged food items above the Maximum Retail Price marked by the manufacturer.
- Failing to clearly display the prices of bakery products, other food items and goods for consumers.
- Failing to display essential information on packaged goods, including the date of manufacture, expiry date, batch number, and the manufacturer’s name and address.
- Displaying expired food products for sale.
Action has been taken to institute legal proceedings against the offending shops and restaurants in the relevant Magistrate’s Courts under the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
The law will be strictly enforced, without discrimination, against traders who sell goods to passengers above the stipulated prices or provide substandard food products. Similar special raids will continue to be conducted island-wide.
Consumers are requested to report information regarding such unfair trading practices to the CAA’s 1977 hotline during office hours.
