Urimaikkaha Ezhu Tamila 2026: Youth take up call for Tamil self-determination

Tamils from across Europe gathered in Brussels, Belgium, on 22 June for the annual Urimaikkaha Ezhu Tamila protest, reaffirming calls for the liberation of Tamil Eelam, justice for the Tamil genocide and the right of the Tamil nation to self-determination.

The demonstration also placed emphasis on the responsibility of the younger generation to carry the Tamil national cause onto international platforms and ensure that the struggle for justice and freedom continues across generations.

Organised by the Tamil Youth Organization in coordination with Anaithulaga Thodarpakam, and supported by the Tamil Coordinating Committee and the International Council of Eelam Tamils, the event brought together youth, families, activists and members of the public from several European countries.

The day began with a march through the streets of Brussels, accompanied by drums, slogans and the Tamil Eelam national flag.

Participants carried banners highlighting the continuing realities faced by Tamils in the homeland, as the procession passed through key areas of the city and drew the attention of members of the public, tourists and international institutions based in Brussels.

The march reflected the continued mobilisation of the Tamil diaspora in Europe, seventeen years after the end of the armed conflict, as Tamils continue to demand accountability for genocide, enforced disappearances, land occupation, militarisation and political repression in the Tamil homeland.

Following the march, participants gathered for the main programme, where the Common Flame of Remembrance, the Pothu Chudar, was lit.

Tributes were then paid to Tamil martyrs and civilians who lost their lives during the Tamil Eelam national struggle, with floral tributes laid and a moment of silence observed.

Speakers from several countries reflected on the unresolved challenges facing the Tamil people, stressing that the Tamil national question remains unaddressed despite repeated calls for justice.

They spoke of ongoing militarisation, land occupation, enforced disappearances, political repression and the lack of meaningful international accountability.

The central message throughout the protest was the responsibility of Tamil youth to continue advancing the Tamil cause on international platforms.

The Tamil Youth Organization said,

"Youth representatives reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the history, rights and aspirations of the Tamil nation are not forgotten."

The programme also featured cultural performances and artistic presentations reflecting the resilience and determination of the Tamil people.

At the heart of the event was a declaration calling for the Tamil nation’s right to self-determination, justice and a permanent political solution founded on the recognition of the Tamil people’s collective rights.

For many young Tamils present, the protest was both an act of remembrance and a statement of continuity. It brought together a generation raised in the diaspora, but rooted in the history, identity and political aspirations of the Tamil nation.

Participants closed the event by singing the "Nambungal Tamileelam" song, before joining in the proclamation, "தமிழரின் தாகம் தமிழீழ தாயகம்" ("The thirst of the Tamil people is Tamileelam, the homeland").

The strong turnout in Brussels demonstrated that the Tamil people’s demand for self-determination, freedom and justice continues to endure across generations and borders.

As the day came to a close, organisers and participants reaffirmed that the struggle for Tamil Eelam remains alive not only in the homeland, but across diaspora communities that continue to organise, remember and resist.
