Lawyers urge review of Judges’ Retirement Plan
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has written to Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara regarding the proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges.
In its letter, the BASL has requested that an appropriate committee be appointed to conduct a comprehensive study of the proposal and submit a subject-specific report before any further action is taken.
The Government’s reported plan to introduce a constitutional amendment extending the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges has already generated considerable public debate.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has already expressed its opposition to the proposal, while 65 judges of the Judicial Service Association, representing magistrates and district judges, have also opposed the move.
