LPL team Jaffna Kings owner arrested

A person claiming to be the owner of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise Jaffna Kings has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Police Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports over alleged match-fixing offences.

Police confirmed that the arrest was made ahead of the official launch of the 2026 Lanka Premier League.

Police said the arrest was made following alleged attempts by the suspect to solicit match-fixing from 03 players who have represented the Sri Lankan national team, including both current and former players.

According to police, the arrest was made following an investigation into alleged sports-related corruption.

It has been reported that Indian sports entrepreneurs Manjot Kalra and Mayank Goel, through their company Sports Commune, had recently acquired ownership of the Jaffna Kings franchise.

Police stated that legal action will be initiated under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act in connection with the incident.

Under the Act, match-fixing, spot-fixing and other forms of manipulation in sports are criminal offences, with convicted offenders liable for substantial fines and imprisonment.

Further investigations are underway, and more details will be disclosed in due course, Police added.
