Gampaha Osmond’s son files writ petition against potential arrest

Shehan Gunasekara, son of underworld figure Osmond Gunasekara alias “Gampaha Osmond”, has filed a writ petition seeking an order preventing the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) from arresting him in connection with the murder of organised crime figure – Ganemulla Sanjeewa.

The Court of Appeal has ordered that the petition be taken up for hearing.

The petition, filed by Shehan Gunasekara of Ibulgoda, Gampaha, has named the Director of the CCD – SSP Indika Lokuhetti, and several others as respondents.

A  two-member Appeals Court judge bench comprising Justices Sasi Mahendran and Adithya Patabendige directed that notices be issued on the respondents, requiring them to appear before the court on Sept. 03 and present their submissions.

The petition was filed through Attorney-at-Law Amila Kumara.

In his petition, Gunasekara stated that he is a businessman by profession and that his father had been arrested in connection with the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa and is currently being detained under detention orders while investigations continue.

He further claimed that 02 firearms recovered during a search of his father’s residence on May 13 were legally licensed, but alleged that media reports had incorrectly stated that the weapons were being kept illegally.

The petitioner stated that he had been instructed to appear before the CCD to record a statement and had visited the division on several occasions for this purpose.

He alleged that during questioning, officers had inquired whether he had maintained contact with “Kehelbaddara Padme” while the latter was in Thailand, and claimed that the questioning was conducted in a threatening manner.

Gunasekara further stated that there was a possibility of him being arrested at any time and requested the Court of Appeal to issue an order preventing such an arrest.

President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena appeared for the petitioner with Attorney-at-Law Rukshan Senadheera on the instructions of Attorney-at-Law Amila Kumara, while State Counsel Akila Dalpadadu appeared for the Attorney General.
