In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Ni Lisheng, Director of China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka said : “The Giant Panda is not only a national treasure of China but also a precious natural and cultural heritage cherished by all mankind.”
Principal of Presbyterian Girls’ School – Ms. Thamara Kumari Dissanayake, Secretary to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka – Mr. Pradeep Saputhantri, Secretary of the Western Provincial Council – Mr. Harsha Wijewardena and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Education – Dr. Madhura Seneviratne also addressed the gathering.
Following the remarks, the guests jointly participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the exhibition and experience immersive showcases including holographic projections, VR interactions, and digital pandas.
The exhibition chronicles the life journey of the Giant Panda from birth to adulthood, highlighting its close ties to both the external natural environment and global human culture.
The exhibition is divided into five core sections :
• Prologue
• Origin – An Encounter of Ten Thousand Years: Explores the prehistoric origins of the giant panda and the legend of the “iron-eating beast,” tracing its evolutionary journey from ancient times to the present.
• Popular Science – Growth Album: A comprehensive chronicle documenting the giant panda’s physical transformation from a 140- gram newborn to a 120-kilogram adult, aimed at popularizing conservation knowledge.
• Connection – Friendship Ambassador: Features a green interactive world map that tracks the global footprint of giant pandas on loan, serving as a testament to the global friendships they foster.
• Art – Cultural Ambassador: Showcases cross-disciplinary giant panda artwork crafted from various materials, including sculptures and ceramics. This section also features a special exhibition of Mr. Xue Kang’s “Giant Panda Stamp Album Illustrated Handbook,” conveying the universal values of “peace, inclusivity, resilience, and lovability” embodied by the giant panda.
To enhance visitor engagement, four highly entertaining interactive digital AI experiences have been specially integrated into the exhibition area :
• Panda Photo Booth: Using AR technology, visitors can have an adorable, stylized “Star Cluster Panda” appear on their shoulder for a real-time photo, which can be downloaded to their smartphones via QR code.
• AR Flying Screen Panda: Visitors can doodle and color on paper templates. Once scanned, their giant panda will “fly into” the large screen, transforming into a 3D avatar that runs, jumps, and plays inside a digital forest.
• Digital Panda Keeper Interaction: Visitors can simulate feeding bamboo and apples to a giant panda through sensor inputs or hand gestures. The projected panda responds in real time with animations of chewing, acting cute, and rolling around.
• AI Painting Experience: By simply doodling or sketching their ideas on the screen, visitors can watch as AI instantly transforms their creative vision into a one-of-a-kind giant panda digital masterpiece.
The giant panda has long been a symbol of peace and friendship. Hosting the “China Giant Panda Star Cluster Digital Art Exhibition” in Sri Lanka is not only a high-profile showcase of “culture + technology,” but also represents another deep interconnection between China and Sri Lanka across culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
The exhibition will run until June next year. Interested organizations are welcome to contact the China Cultural Center via Nisha – 0713976597 / nishachinaculturalcenter@gamil.com
