இந்தியா தனது 80-வது சுதந்திர தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடுகிறது. புதுடெல்லியில் உள்ள வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்புமிக்க செங்கோட்டையில் நடைபெற்ற அதிகாரப்பூர்வ விழாவில், 80 ஆண்டுகால பாரம்பரியத்தில் முதல் முறையாக மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது.

Celebrations of the 80th Indian Independence Day was held in Colombo today morning (Aug. 15).

The flag hoisting ceremony and celebrations were held at the India House under the auspices of High Commissioner – Santosh Jha, which was attended by the Indian diaspora in Sri Lanka.

The national celebrations in 2026 focus on the core theme of “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047” alongside commemorating “150 Years of Vande Mataram”.

Earlier, the High Commissioner and officials of the High Commission of India also paid tributes to the memory of Indian soldiers at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial in Sri Lanka.

India win the toss in Galle

India won the toss today (15) in the first Test of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and the touring Indian team.

Indian captain Shubman Gill, who won the toss, elected to bat first. This is the 50th Test match to be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, where teams batting first have won 26 matches.

Teams bowling first have won 16 matches. Both sides have entered today’s match aiming to begin the series with a victory.

The temporarily closed Hatton-Colombo main road has been reopened to traffic, according to reports.

The road was temporarily closed this morning (15) after an earth slip occurred in the Kuilwatta area of Hatton.

Hatton Police have requested motorists travelling along the road to use the Norton Bridge route.

The road has been reopened after the earth that had fallen onto the road was cleared, in coordination with the Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit and Hatton Police.

A suspect who was allegedly planning to assassinate two prison officers has been arrested by Sahaspura Police.

Police said the suspect is a 30-year-old resident of the Badowita area.

An examination of his mobile phone revealed that he had allegedly been planning to kill two prison officers on the instructions of an organised criminal and drug trafficker known as “Kos Malli”, who is currently overseas.

Police said they also found audio recordings of conversations between the suspect and Kos Malli while examining the suspect’s mobile phone.

Police said the suspect had been released on bail three days before the unrest broke out at the New Magazine Prison.

The suspect is also a close associate of Mohamed Asman, an organised criminal who was killed during the unrest at the New Magazine Prison.

Police said Asman had acted as the gunman in a double murder that took place on Watarappala Road in Dehiwala last year.

The Presidential Special Commission of Inquiry investigating coal transactions has reportedly recorded statements from former Energy Ministers Kanchana Wijesekera and Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

Kanchana Wijesekera was questioned for more than five hours yesterday (14), during which his statement was recorded, while former Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi gave a statement the previous day (13).

Former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody was also questioned recently in connection with the coal transactions.

The Commission is said to have so far recorded statements from nearly 150 people in connection with the coal transactions.

The Commission is headed by Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga. The other members are Court of Appeal Justice Adithya Patabendige and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somarathne.

The Commission has decided to question several more people in the coming days.
